Part Time MBA
Part-time MBA programs are structured keeping in mind the needs of working professionals. As the name suggests, classes for part-time MBA’s are held part-time i.e. either in the evenings or over weekends. Full-day classes are not held thus enabling students to juggle between work and lectures.
There are some schools offering both full time as well as part-time MBA programs. Classes are held throughout the year and normally there are no internships. Some programs, through concentrations and open electives, offer the same ability to specialize as full time programs. The only difference, however, is that a part-time MBA program is spread over a longer period of time which ranges from three to five years.
Such programs are popular among people having a strong foundation in the corporate world and are looking out to enhance their skills. They are also useful for people having a wide network in their field or for people looking for a change in job. Since classes are conducted after standard business hours, new skills can be developed without affecting a students’ current job. Students bring in their own experiences to the classroom; discover better and workable solutions that can also be implemented at their workplace.
Eligible students can avail of loans. Some employees pursuing the program may get tuition reimbursement as an employee benefit. Since the cost is spread over a longer period of time, it is useful for those who want to continue earning and are unwilling to take a loan. Since the expenses of the course can be spread over time, scholarship money may not be available. Students taking up the part-time program initially cannot transfer to full time. One should check the flexibility of programs before enrolling if one’s work requires frequent travel or relocation.
In a nut-shell, part-time MBA programs work as efficient career enhancers, especially for people who have a good foundation of experience and want to move up the corporate ladder in their chosen field.
